In case you haven’t noticed all this traffic on the water, there has been an influx of new boaters since the start of the pandemic. Many of these enthusiastic boaters are buying their own boat for the first time, or could benefit from a refresher on the basics of boating.
The Marine Trades Association of Maryland (MTAM) hosted Welcome to Boating Clinics first in August 2020 and then again in May 2021. They were so popular the clinics will return this month with increased capacity, and Chesapeake Bay Media is a proud media sponsor of this free service to the nautical community.
On September 17 and 18 at Sandy Point State Park, new boaters can learn how to properly launch, retrieve and load their boat onto a trailer as well as how to moor the boat. MTAM enlisted the help of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Boat US Foundation, and the Annapolis School of Seamanship (sister company of Chesapeake Bay Media) to help new boaters practice safety on the water and ensure that they become confident and continue to sail.
The mooring, launching and safety instruction, provided by the Annapolis School of Seamanship and the Boat US Foundation, will last 30 minutes each and will be repeated four times per day. In addition to mooring, launching and safety, several organizations will be on hand to discuss possible topics of interest, including:
Rockets and other safety items – Orion Safety Products
Paints and finishes – Interlux Paint Finishes
Wintering – Safe Harbor Marinas
Safety of supply docks – Oasis Marinas
Towing and anchoring – TowBoat US
Clean boating – DNR Clean Marina
Fishing and Conservation – Coastal Conservation Association of Maryland
Clinics will be held at the Sandy Point boat launches on September 17 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and September 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration is free, but registration is required. There is a charge for admission to Sandy Point State Park. MTAM says boaters shouldn’t bring their own craft — all training must be done on the Annapolis Seamanship School boats.
Annapolis Boat Shows are offering discounted tickets to the October Boat Shows in Annapolis to all who attend.
