BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – For the most part, school was closed this Labor Day. However, for a group of students from the University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus, class was underway on a kayaking trip to Deer Island.
“Campus recreation is part of student affairs, so it’s more like student retention. We want them to have a good place to recreate,” Bill Powe said. “With Campus Rec, these outdoor adventure trips are marketed for the semester, and students who enroll in them have the option of leaving campus for a day trip and we will also have a day trip. night.”
This is part of the class and school perseverance.
“Our students who are with us are leaders, and they are learning to train new leaders. It’s an opportunity for people interested in taking the trip, and the leaders gaining experience in leading the trip,” Rowe added.
They say it was a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and take a trip through the Biloxi Channel to Deer Island.
“It’s a little different for me. My major is social work, but I’m learning every day. For our students, it’s definitely a chance to get out and learn new things, to bond with your friends and make new memories. That’s what college is all about,” said Kathryn Moolenaar, a native and graduate assistant from Charlotte, North Carolina.
