Ron Hunter, Lake Cathie’s Santa Claus is back on the lake and spreading Christmas cheer as the holidays approach. Drivers traveling along Ocean Drive can spot him paddling around the lake in his red kayak and Santa hat every morning until Christmas. Mr Hunter said there had been changes this year after he and his wife moved to Port Macquarie in late June. “We moved to Port Macquarie at the end of June but the people at Lake Cathie were very nice and let me use their yard to store the kayak,” he said. “I drove to retrieve the kayak and I think I’ll probably be here every day until Christmas. “Today it’s mostly adults who see me. I’m popular with shopkeepers and parents who take kids to school, but the kids are all stuck on their devices now.” He is joined in the kayak by the adorable Jack Russell, Ruby, who always enjoys a quick swim to shore. Ron’s former dog, Spike, died in 2017 at the age of 17. Mr Hunter said motorists always insisted on honking him when driving to work and emergency services flash their lights when crossing the bridge at Lac Cathie. “The lake is pretty full right now and I like it. You can paddle and get in between the tea trees,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for 15 years now and it’s always rewarding to see the wave and the fun of the people.” Our reporters work hard to provide local and up-to-date news to the community.
