âI run all of our programming here, we have a few leagues, we have an introductory pickleball class. I also give one-to-one lessons for people who may be getting into sports, âZitur said.
Pickleball grew in popularity during the pandemic, the sport now has nearly three million players nationwide.
âI think it’s easy to pick up. It’s one of those things, where there isn’t a very high bar at the entrance. Something like tennis can be a little frustrating because it takes you a while to even be able to hit back and forth against pickleball, really the first day you can start doing it, âZitur said.
Some see pickleball as a relaxing sport, or another way to stay active, just ask Amy Olson, LPGA golfer and avid pickleball player.
âIt’s competitive, my husband and I can play with my parents and it’s a great game. So there’s that level where you have to be fit and active, but all ages can play, âsaid Olson.
“My mom introduced me probably four years ago, she started playing with a few of her friends, came home and started talking about this pickleball thing, and we thought” oh mama is into something new. “Once we started playing my whole family got hooked. We hooked Grant, we hooked his parents, and now just about everyone we know is presenting him too.” , added Olson.
Pickleball is a combination of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Pickleball is played on a tennis court or on the floor of a gymnasium, the net is smaller than a tennis court, a wiffle ball is used instead, and you hit with a paddle, not a racquet.
âIt’s like an enlarged ping-pong paddle. One of the good things about it is that you can buy one and you’ll be fine. On the other hand, if you play tennis, especially if you hit the ball harder, you obviously risk breaking the strings. It’s obviously solid, so it doesn’t really break, âZitur said.
But Zitur’s main message is a sport anyone can try.
âI think it’s just kind of a snowball effect where people kind of played. I think that’s why it has such a big reach, because you meet younger people, but it has also taken off in the retirement community as something to do to stay active. Zitur said.
Courts Plus begins its indoor pickleball league at the end of October. You can find out how to join a league by visiting this link.
