Here in Old Dominion, there are many unique ways to enjoy the water, whether you’re swimming in the ocean or exploring one of the state’s great rivers. Today’s featured destination is one of those places you can’t reach on foot, but you’ll be glad you went the extra mile. In the middle of the Chesapeake Bay awaits a strange and supernatural ghost fleet known as Kiptopeke Breakwater. These concrete vessels tell a story of decades past, and seeing them from the water is an unforgettable experience for historians and nature lovers.
For incredible recreational access to the Chesapeake Bay, it doesn’t get better than Kiptopeke State Park in southeastern Virginia. Located in Cape Charles, this natural space offers a treasure trove of adventure.
One of the most interesting features of the park is the Concrete Fleet, also known as Kiptopeke Breakwater.
These huge concrete ships are located just west of the old Chesapeake Bay Ferry Terminal.
During World War II, 24 concrete ships were contracted by the United States Maritime Commission. Today, 9 of them are located just off Kiptopeke Beach, where they have remained since 1948 for protection from the weather.
For a truly unforgettable adventure, you can rent a kayak and gear at Kiptopeke Pier and paddle to the ships.
Seen from a distance, these ships are impressive, but seeing them up close, you will realize how giant they are!
