“Z” may be Zorro’s hallmark, but it’s Nissan’s passion. But, hey, don’t take my word for it. This is the word of the boss of Nissan.

“Z is the pure expression of thrill. It’s Nissan’s passion on four wheels, ”said Ashwani Gupta, CEO of the company.

And that explains why a two-door, two-seat coupe – after a brief hiatus – is relaunched in an automotive landscape that’s crazy for crossover SUVs.

After skipping model years 2021 and 22, the Nissan Z returns in 2023 simply as the Nissan Z – no number in its nickname, as has been the case in the past. Nonetheless, Nissan is clearly hoping to have someone’s number – oh, let’s say the Toyota Supra and Ford Mustang.

To make a splash in the shrinking two-seater coupe category, this new Z has embraced both its historical heritage and the reality of 21st century living.

As far as heritage goes, the styling is clearly inspired by the original Zs of the early ’70s, the 240Z, 260Z and 280Z – cars still discussed in respectful, muted tones by sports coupe enthusiasts. This new Z proves it shares that reverence with a nod to its grandfathers via its classic long bonnet / short deck and rear-wheel drive proportions. Other classic elements include the flowing roofline profile, square croup and rear window.

Inside, this reverence for the past continues with the three Z-brand analog gauges atop the center console.
