NEWPORT – The Little Buffalo State Park complex will host a number of events in October.
Shoaffís Mill, an area of the resort, is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. until Apple Day (staff permitting). Additionally, the Blue Ball Tavern is open October 16 and 17 for tours of the Perry County Museum (if volunteers allow).
This month’s programs include:
October 3: 10 a.m. – Mammals in Boyd: Discover the mammals of the Boyd Big Tree Preserve. Meet at Boyd Big Tree Preserve Lodge, Dauphin.
October 7: 4:30 p.m. – Homeschool Day: Radical Reptiles. All children are welcome. Please register. Meet at Pavilion 3, stage space.
October 9: 10 a.m. – Initiation to kayaking: beginners only. Must register. Meet at the main boat launch at Holman Lake (Boat Launch Road).
Oct. 10: 10 a.m. – Bird watching walk: meet in the parking lot of pavilions 1 and 2.
October 12: 1 p.m. – Corn grinding at the mill: meet at the Shoaffís mill.
October 13: 1 p.m. – Invasive Species in Boyd: Meet at Boyd Big Tree Lodge.
October 15: 4 p.m. – Radical Reptiles in Boyd: Meet at Boyd Big Tree.
October 16 & 17: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. – Apple Festival and Blue Ball Tavern Tours: Watch corn grinding, apple butter boiling and cider pressing, and sample local dishes during of the annual apple festival. The Blue Ball Tavern Museum is open for tours. Demonstrators and additional historical activities will also be available. Meet at Shoaffís Mill, eastern day-use area.
Oct. 21: 6:30 p.m. – Moonlight paddling: registration required. Meet at the main Holman Lake boat launch.
October 23: 10 a.m. – Boyd Tree Identification Walk: Meet at Boyd Big Tree.
October 24: 10 a.m. – Tree identification walk: meet at Pavilion 3, stage area.
Oct. 24: 4 p.m. – Owl Outlaws: Pavilion 3, scenic area.
October 27: 7 p.m. – Bats! : Separate the facts from the myths when looking for bats in the Eastern Day Use Area. Pavilion 3, stage area.
