Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Ltd. (IRSDC) announced on Friday that it had launched a call for tenders for the establishment and maintenance of a “railway arcade” at Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna station and at Chandigarh station for a period of nine years.

The aim of this initiative is to provide best-in-class amenities to passengers and improve their travel experience, he said. The railway arcade is envisioned as a mini-city center with dining, entertainment, leisure and retail facilities.

It is part of IRSDC’s overall mandate to undertake facility management at five railway stations across India – KSR Bengaluru, Pune, Anand Vihar, Chandigarh and Secunderabad, IRSDC said in a statement.

Demand-driven design, excellent quality, safety and security, innovative offerings, an attractive revenue generation model and sustainability will be the hallmarks of this initiative, he added.

“It will allow passengers to use their mundane waiting time and turn it into leisure time, and they will be eager to visit these stations. As an integrated facility, Rail Arcade will power business operations and be a tremendous step in transforming stations into a RAILOPOLIS – an integrated mini smart city for ‘work, play and ride’, ”said the Managing Director and CEO of IRSDC, SK Lohia.

Some of the facilities on offer at the Railway Arcade include food and beverage (F&B), a passenger convenience store, gifts, books and magazines, looms and artifacts, consumer goods kiosks including consumer goods and pharmaceuticals.

The concessionaire will be mandated to take over the identified space and undertake the remodeling of the entire area for the development of commercial, leisure and entertainment spaces at the station.

Soon, IRSDC will begin managing the facilities of another 90 stations on a phased basis, the statement added.
