Infiniti’s QX55 Joins 2022 Line-Up as New Approach to FX Sports Concept


Infiniti broke new ground in the sport utility vehicle market with the introduction in 2002 of the FX35, a sporty sloped-roof model that looked more like a coupe than an SUV.

The FX helped create the now ubiquitous crossover segment, as it was among the first SUVs to be designed on a unibody car chassis rather than a body truck on chassis.

FX was based on the rear-wheel drive chassis of the Nissan 370Z sports car, which also served as the foundation for the Infiniti G35 sedan and coupe.

For 2013, the FX became the QX70 when Infiniti introduced its new QX nomenclature for SUV models, then the QX70 was quietly discontinued after 2017.

Now the FX design concept has been revived for the all-new 2022 Infiniti QX55 five-passenger sport crossover, with the sleek drop rear roofline giving it the same type of coupe silhouette.
This time around, the new coupe-crossover is closely based on the five-passenger Infiniti QX50 crossover, which has the same undercarriage, but not the sporty roofline.

Three QX55 trim levels are offered in its first year, and all come standard with Infiniti Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. These are the Luxe base ($ 46,500, plus $ 1,025 in freight); intermediate level Essential ($ 51,600); and high-end Sensory ($ 57,050), the model we tested for this report.

This compares to a price range of $ 36,950 to $ 56,850 for the 2021 QX50 (no 2022 price has yet been announced). The QX50 Luxe AWD model costs $ 43,500, while the Essential AWD model costs $ 46,700 and Sensory AWD $ 52,000.

Of course, the biggest difference between the FX and the stock QX70 compared to the new QX55 is that the QX55 is mounted on the front-wheel drive chassis of the Nissan Pathfinder, which is probably why Infiniti chose to give everyone the all standard QX55 models. driving wheels. Fans of the FX / QX70 would at least expect rear-wheel drive.

As with the QX50, the new QX55 comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission, which is surprising given that Nissan just introduced a 2022 Pathfinder SUV that ditched the CVT for a conventional nine-speed automatic. But the QX55 comes with paddle shifters to simulate manual shifting.

Under the hood of all trim levels of the QX55 is the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in the QX50, rated at 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.

The QX55 is slightly longer than the QX50 – 186.3 inches versus 184.7 inches. The wheelbase is the same, at 110.2 inches.
Weights are also similar – 4,065 pounds for our QX55 Sensory tester, compared to 4,127 for the QX50 Sensory AWD model.
Interior features include wireless Apple CarPlay, dual touchscreens for infotainment / navigation and vehicle controls, a sliding second row seat, and larger cargo space than other premium coupe-style crossovers. similar – 26.9 cubic feet behind the back seat, or 54.1 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks folded down.

Our tester came with Infiniti Head-Up Display and ProPILOT Advanced Support, both included on the Sensory model.
On the outside there is a distinctive double arch mesh grille, and on our Sensory model there were 20 inch black painted and machine finished aluminum alloy wheels, with all season tires. limited sag.

We had the premium slate gray exterior paint ($ 695) and a Monaco Red semi-aniline leather interior with black natural maple wood accents.

A power sunroof and roof rails were standard, along with automatic cube-shaped LED headlamps, LED daytime running lights, and LED front fog lights.

The motion-activated power tailgate provided easy access to cargo space. There was a heated, leather-wrapped tilt / telescopic steering wheel; improved mood interior lighting; rain-sensing windshield wipers; Heated, tilt-down exterior mirrors; smart key with push-button start and remote start; auto-dimming rearview mirror; three-zone automatic air conditioning; power adjustable heated and cooled front bucket seats with power lumbar adjustment; memory for driver’s seat, mirrors and steering column; active noise cancellation; and the acoustic front window glass.

There is room for up to five people in the new Infiniti QX55 crossover for 2022, with two in the front bucket seats and three in the rear bench.


The rear seat was equipped with sliding, reclining and folding flat functions. But rear seat leg and knee room is limited, especially for tall people who ride in front with the bucket seats pushed back onto their rails.

Our infotainment system included a 16-speaker Bose premium audio setup, Wi-Fi hotspot, automatic Apple CarPlay / Android connectivity, navigation with MapCare and Premium Traffic-plus, and Infiniti InTouch services.

The ProPILOT Assist system provided steering assistance, intelligent cruise control and traffic sign recognition. We also had hill start assist; front and rear parking sensors; Around View camera system, with detection of moving objects; remote control assistance; and adaptive front lighting.

Among the safety features included were high beam assist, forward collision warning and front emergency braking with pedestrian detection, rear cross traffic alert with automatic rear braking, warning and blind spot intervention, and lane departure warning and intervention.

Extras on our test vehicle, in addition to the premium paint, included the lighting package ($ 925), with welcome lighting and illuminated skid plates; Cargo Kit ($ 350), adding reversible cargo mat, cargo blocks, console net, cargo net, and black film rear bumper protector; and a lifestyle hitch ($ 450).

The quality of the cabin has been improved through the use of premium materials and craftsmanship, and active noise cancellation and better insulation allowed for a quiet ride, even on rough roads.

Driving the QX55 is like driving a sports sedan. The performance is quite correct, thanks to the turbo engine. Although it runs on gasoline, it has the torque and fuel efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel engine.

EPA ratings are 22 mpg city / 28 highway / 25 combined. The tank holds 16 gallons of gasoline, and super unleaded is recommended but not required.

On the mechanical side, our QX55 was equipped with electronic stability control with traction control, Nissan’s Easy Fill tire alert, four-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, and ‘an electronic parking brake.

The Infiniti infotainment / navigation system includes voice control, Bluetooth phone and audio, satellite radio, SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link, AM / FM radio with CD player and four USB ports. There is a dual display system with upper eight inch and lower seven inch LCD touch screens.

Safety features also included side air bags mounted in the front and rear seats; knee airbags for driver and front passenger; front and rear side curtain airbags with rollover sensors; and child seat tethers and anchors for the rear seat; and independent tire pressure monitoring.

The QX55 comes with easy-to-read gauges, welcome lighting and, of course, the standard Infiniti analog clock. There is a seven inch color screen with Infiniti controller for the on-board computer.

The total sticker price for our QX55 Sensory model was $ 60,495, including freight, premium paint, and options.
