FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – This New Years Eve, South Florida law enforcement is reminding you to think twice before you get behind the wheel.
“State officials don’t call Uber, Lyft, a cab, or a friend. But we’ll take you to jail. That’s what we do, ”said Florida Highway Patrol Maj. Robert J. Chandler.

On Friday morning, the FHP and other officials held a press conference in Broward County to warn of drunk driving this holiday weekend.
“We know by the very nature of this holiday that a large number of people will celebrate the New Year by consuming an alcoholic beverage,” Chandler said.

New Year’s weekend is always a busy one for law enforcement. FHP has announced that they have “all hands on deck” for the holiday weekend, which also includes the sold-out Orange Bowl game on Friday night.
Florida Fish and Wildlife officers will also patrol the waters for anyone operating a boat under the influence.
“Twenty-three percent of boating-related deaths in 2020 were alcohol or drug-related,” said Tyson Matthews, head of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. “There is no tolerance for sailing under the influence, you will go to jail.”

FHP also announced that this year they will have additional soldiers on the road early in the morning, such as 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. when they said some drivers were trying to get home after the New Years holidays.
