DANA POINT (CBSLA) – Commercial fishing crews removed their lobster traps from the water on Wednesday after all fisheries between Sunset Beach and Dana Point were closed due to the Orange County oil spill.

Dubois said the timing of the 126,000-gallon crude oil spill off the coast of Orange County is particularly damaging.

“The worst possible moment. Yeah, it has effects… quite heavy, ”Dubois said.

For Josh Hernandez, who started fishing a few years ago, he says his future is right now and he also has slip fees, insurance and many other overheads during this crucial time.

“I got $ 1,000 of bait here. I put $ 10,000 in the boat. And I have credit cards and a two-year-old at home, ”Hernandez said.

The owner of the Linda Faye leaves her boat docked and heads to Oregon for the time being, saying he is worried about a future that could include the stigma of rotten seafood.

“No one knows at the moment. We will have to do a test on the lobster and it will be a long process, ”he said.

Meanwhile, Dubois says the spill is already affecting his results.

“You’re looking at thousands and thousands and tens of thousands of dollars for me for sure. I know a lot of these guys, they have bigger licenses, bigger responsibilities, ”he said.

The president of the California Lobster and Trap Association hopes his industry gets help with the financial impact and ensures the fishery remains sustainable.
