If you’re looking for the perfect gift for the angler in your life, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is reminding holiday shoppers that starting January 1, anglers 16 and over will need a new license. annual sport fishing. to take or prosecute any fish, shellfish, crustacean, invertebrate, reptile or amphibian in California (including catch-and-release fishing) during the calendar year 2022. Although the 365 day license is definitely part of of the future of angling in California thanks to AB 817, some additional steps are required to bring the option online. CDFW’s goal is to have this option and other e-licensing enhancements available in 2023.
CDFW’s online license and service site makes it easy to give away a gift that will be enjoyed all year round. To purchase a sport fishing license as a gift, go to the online license sales and services site and select “Guest” from the tabs at the top. Then select “Sport fishing” and in the “Voucher” section select “Add”. Then enter the name of the person for whom the license is intended and follow the instructions to purchase and print the voucher. Vouchers purchased online are not mailed to customers and must be printed at the time of purchase.
A California sport fishing license offers more fishing opportunities than any other state in the country. California has 1,100 miles of ocean coast, 4,172 lakes and reservoirs, 29,664 miles of streams and rivers, and 1,800 miles of bay and delta waters. A sport fishing license is the fisherman’s passport to these incredible opportunities.

Please note that Governor Newsom signed AB 817 drafted by Assembly Member Jim Wood (D-Santa Rosa) during the last legislative session which, among other things, provides that CDFW may provide an option to display Sport fishing license items on a mobile device and sell a sport fishing license that will be valid 365 days from the date of purchase rather than the calendar year. However, implementing these parts of this new law requires technological infrastructure revisions, so none will be available in license year 2022.
On the other hand, AB 817 also extends the criteria for discounted sport fishing licenses to Californians over 65 and enjoying certain benefits. These new criteria come into effect on January 1, 2022 and allow any low-income senior, 65 years of age or older, who resides in California and receives benefits through the Supplemental Income Security (SSI) or the Assistance program in cash for the Elderly, Blind and Legal Immigrant Disabled (CAPI), to obtain a sport fishing license for $ 8.24.
