Boating on Punnami-Bhavani Island Resumes | Vijayawada News

Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) finally resumed its boating activities on the Krishna River between Punnami Ghat and Bhavani Island in the city on Sunday.
Navigation services have been suspended for the past three months due to floodwater inflows upstream. Now, the state irrigation department has given the green signal to resume operations after the inflows drop significantly, making boating safe near the Dam area. Hundreds of tourists and locals lined up on Sunday and Monday as about five boats belonging to APTDC began operations. APTDC officials said all necessary precautions for Covid and passenger safety measures are being taken. Three boats out of 16 have a capacity of 45 seats each and two boats have a capacity of 25 seats.
Officials said the remaining 11 boats would also begin operations after assessing needs. Speaking to TOI, APTDC Vijayawada division manager Srinivas Rao said the boating service was used by more than 1,300 people on Sunday. “The restaurant and other places on Bhavani Island are open to the public. These include Maze Garden and Robotic Park. We will soon be operating the remaining boats as well, ”said Rao. Boating operations have taken a hit on the Krishna River since the boat crash in Papikondalu. The 2019 flood damaged Bhavani Island and authorities spent more than Rs 1 crore to complete the repair work. The Papikondalu boat cruise also resumed on Sunday with additional safety measures.
