The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is hosting events statewide this Saturday, Sept. 18 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. to kick off National Hunt and Fish Week. Wil Hafner, facilities manager at the Potlatch Conservation Education Center in Cook’s Lake, said free fishing tournaments will be held for youth and adults.
âTo register for this event, you can go to the Arkansas Game and Fish website at agfc.com. There is now a link on the home page, and it says âCatch the Celebrationâ. You will click on it and be able to find the events in your area, âHafner said. âIf by any chance you don’t register in advance, that’s okay. You can always get off and we can sign you up.
Wright Lake at DeWitt City Park is one of the locations selected for the celebration. Participants are kindly requested to bring their own fishing equipment, bait, chairs, snacks and drinks.

âThis event is going to be a small scale fishing event. It’s really just a way to get people out, bring families out and get them fishing, âHafner said. “We will have Game and Fish employees there, who will answer questions and help (people) fish.”
This is the second year that the AGFC has organized this event.
âA few years ago, we did it on National Hunting and Fishing Day. This year, we will be doing it with the kick-off of National Hunt and Fish Week. We hope to do it year after year, âsaid Hafner.
Participants aged 16 and over require a valid fishing license, which can be purchased by visiting the AGFC website.
