An Iowa kayaker was rescued Friday night after his kayak capsized in the South Skunk River. The Ames Fire Department responded to North River Valley Park, 725 East 13th St., at 5:50 p.m. The kayaker had capsized in the rapids at the low-fall dam. site and lost his paddle, the Ames Fire Department reported. She headed for a rocky ridge in the center of the waterway. The kayaker was uninjured but had no way to reboard her kayak and cross the river. Crews were able to extend a rope to the victim, who was wearing a personal flotation device for safety. Firefighters entered the water in an inflatable lifeboat to reach the kayaker. They were able to maneuver to her and transport her safely to shore, the Ames Fire Department reported. The crew then returned to the water to free the kayak which had become stuck in the rocky rapids. After releasing the kayak, it floated downstream where it was picked up by the kayaker’s partner and the kayak and the second kayaker returned to shore. No more news:
